Hyundai all the way for a winter beater. All 4 brakes shouldn't cost more than 150 in parts and half a days worth of labor to do yourself admittedly that'll suck if you can get a garage to do it in now though. Then it's perfect.

My thoughts exactly, probably something I could do myself,

And it's certainly about time you do them yourself! Might be cold, but it's 5 bolts for the wheels, and two bolts per caliper. Not hard.

True. I still can't tell you to buy the Hyundai though. Not that it's a bad car... but it's not a Saab :P

My apartment has a garage, so I'm still good, as long as the landlord doesn't know, Im seriously thinking the Hyundai , it happens to be closer to home than the Saab..

New tires, new clutch, religious oil changes sound nice.

I just looked it up and it looks like this thing has drums in the rear which are probably fine. So it's just the front brakes, looks like a pair of rotors run you 50 pads are another 50.

The only thing to ask about/look up is the timing belt/chain maintenance and if they've been done. I also looked that up and it looks like it is recommended to do that every 60k miles so ask the last time that service was done. shops typically charge 800 to do it.

I just did a timing belt change on my own car which is a similar beast to this one so I can tell you it is definitely something you can do yourself for 125$, but it is pretty involved and will take all day. I did see a youtube video with instructions on how to do it specifically on that car.

my winter beater is a 2004 Chevy Aveo, I say its similar because it is a transverse mounted DOHC 4cyl with a timing belt that has 60k service intervals and a MT. Not a Hyundai, though it was made in Korea. All the info I found about that car is just from some internet searching
